WILDCAT WELCOME IS GREAT, BUT AN EVEN MORE TIME-HONORED TRADITION OF BEING A FRESHMAN IN COLLEGE IS THE ENDLESS AMOUNT OF ADVICE EVERYONE WANTS TO DISPENSE TO YOU. FROM WELL-MEANING RELATIVES TO NOSY UPPERCLASSMEN, EVERYONE WANTS TO GIVE YOU THE KEY TO SURVIVING COLLEGE, AND THEN WANTS TO KNOW EVERY POSSIBLE THING ABOUT HOW YOU’RE DOING. THE DELUGE OF ADVICE CAN FEEL EVEN MORE OVERWHELMING THAN THE ACTUAL PROCESS OF STARTING COLLEGE.
BUT AS THE QUARTER REACHES ITS MIDPOINT AND MIDTERMS REAR THEIR UGLY HEAD, FRESHMEN AT NORTHWESTERN MIGHT ACTUALLY NEED SOME ADVICE. SO, WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, HERE ARE SOME MORE VOICES TO ADD TO THE CHORUS OF HELPFUL TIPS YOU’VE NO DOUBT BEEN SAVING SINCE YOUR FIRST DAYS HERE.
[Jake Epstein] Good evening, this is Jake Epstein here. Advice that I would have. One piece of advice that I would have for first years is to make sure you stay active. However that may be.
THAT WAS MEDILL SOPHOMORE JAKE EPSTEIN, WHOSE PIECE OF ADVICE WAS PRACTICAL AND NON-ACADEMIC. SOPHOMORE SCOTT HWANG HAD A SIMILAR SENTIMENT.
[Scott Hwang] My advice to freshmen is this: eat, sleep and exercise.
MEDILL JUNIORS LAURA SIMMONS AND SELENA KUZNIKOV DID MENTION ACADEMICS.
[Laura Simmons] Don’t be more stressed and anxious about school than you have to be. It’s not worth it.
[Selena Kuznikov] Advice I would have for freshmen is just don’t take yourself too seriously. Just just chill out. It’s fine. It’ll be fine. Things will work out.
WEINBERG JUNIOR MADELEINE WILLIAMS AND GRADUATE STUDENT RODNEY REICHERT BOTH OFFERED PRACTICAL TIPS FOR THE OVERWHELMED FRESHMAN STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF A MIDTERM INDUCED STRESS COMA.
[Madeleine Williams] don’t join every club, if possible, because you will be overwhelmed. Yay.
[Rodney Reichert] At the beginning of each week, or whatever works for you write out all the assignments that you have the upcoming week. You know what they are, what class are for and when they’re due. Just so you know what the hell’s going on.
AND OF COURSE, SCHOOL OF COMM SENIOR ALLISON CASLER, SESP JUNIOR BINAHO WU, AND MEDILL SOPHOMORE WILLIAM TONG ALL HAD TIPS THAT WERE UNFAILINGLY PRACTICAL, BUT DEFINITELY USEFUL TO A NEW COLLEGE STUDENT.
[Allison Casler] learn how to do your own laundry before you get here. Because if you don’t take the lint out of the dryers, or you leave your stuff in the machines for too long, you very quickly become public enemy number one in your dorm.
[Binhao Wu] Pick a really good picture for your wildcard that stays with you for four years.
[William Tong] My advice for freshmen would be to make friends with people in res colleges so you can use their fancy kitchens. That’s it.
WHETHER IT’S KNOWING THE BEST PLACE TO CRY ON CAMPUS, WHERE THE BATHROOMS ARE IN MAIN LIBRARY, OR JUST BEING ABLE TO COMMISERATE ABOUT THE QUARTER SYSTEM, AS A FRESHMAN, YOUR FELLOW STUDENTS CAN BE THE BEST RESOURCE YOU HAVE AT NU. SO IF YOUR MIDTERMS ARE MAKING YOU FEEL LIKE THE YEAR MIGHT NEVER END, DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK SOMEONE FOR HELP. WHO KNOWS? THEY MIGHT NEED SOME ADVICE FROM YOU.
FOR WNUR NEWS, I’M MIKA ELLISON.
