THREE YEARS SINCE HE FINISHED HIS LAST TOUR AND FOUR YEARS SINCE HE LAST PUT OUT MUSIC, HARRY STYLES IS FINALLY BACK TO RELEASING MUSIC. THE EX-ONE DIRECTION MEMBER AND CURRENT POP STAR JUST DROPPED HIS NEW SONG ‘APERTURE’ ON THURSDAY, AND HIS NEW ALBUM IS SET TO COME OUT IN MARCH.
NORTHWESTERN STUDENTS HAVE HAD MIXED REACTIONS TO THE NEW RELEASE.
LEON ANDERSON HAS BEEN A FAN FOR YEARS, SINCE THE RELEASE OF STYLES’ LAST ALBUM, ‘HARRY’S HOUSE’ IN 2022. HE SAYS HE WASN’T A FAN OF ‘APERTURE’ WHEN HE FIRST HEARD IT…
[ANDERSON]: I was like, um this is kind of interesting. I don’t really know how to feel about it. It kind of just sounds like lyrics. Because it was like, why is this five minutes long? Like, what are we, what could you possibly be talking about for five minutes, you know what I mean?
… BUT THE SONG HAS SINCE GROWN ON HIM.
[ANDERSON]: “It’s definitely not the same thing as, you know, like, old Harry, but it’s like, you don’t want the same thing. You want something new, because you can’t grow as an artist if you’re doing the same things.”
CHLOE LEE SAYS SHE ALSO FEELS THIS SONG IS UNLIKE HIS PREVIOUS PROJECTS. HOWEVER, SHE SAYS IT FITS THE ALBUM TITLE, ‘KISS ALL THE TIME. DISCO, OCCASIONALLY.’
[LEE]: I like, kind of like it, though. I feel like it fits the vibe of the title of his album. Like, it does feel very disco and different. And I’m excited to hear what else he has on the new album.
THE RELEASE OF APERTURE FEELS TO BE A DISTINCT PIVOT FROM THE SOFT INDIE POP FEATURED IN HIS LAST ALBUM.
MAHA SOMJI SAYS WHILE SHE LIKES THE SONG, SHE ISN’T A FAN OF THE GENRE CHANGE.
[SOMJI]: I thought it was really different than his past music, so it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, but I liked the lyrics. I wasn’t a huge fan of the melody and the rhythm, but I liked it.
DESPITE THE NEW VIBE, HILLARY RIVAS SAYS SHE ENJOYS THE SONG AND PLANS TO ATTEND STYLES UPCOMING WORLD TOUR.
[RIVAS]: I actually really liked it. I know it’s not similar to his other music, but I’ve actually been listening to it a lot. It’s more I guess techno-ish and even the voice effects a little bit are new for him. But, I don’t know, I think he sounds good.
THERE ARE ONLY FIVE MORE WEEKS UNTIL WE CAN FULLY GRASP THIS NEW ERA OF HARRY STYLES.
