Snubs & Stubs: 2024 Grammys

The 66th Annual Grammys Ceremony was significant for many reasons. Some of them were great, like a Killer Mike sweep and a return from Tracy Chapman. However, some were controversial like Travis Scott’s 10th Grammys snub.

Finally, we got to the rap category. Who really cares about Taylor Swift winning another undeserved Grammy for another boring, uninspired album that people pretend to like?

[…and the grammy for best rap performance goes to…]

To be honest, some of these songs are mad mid… Nobody actually wants “Rich Flex” or “Players” to win, right?

[SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS!]

Ay that’s valid. 3k went crazy on that one for real. Man, I wonder who’s gonna win Best Melodic Rap Performance.

[and the grammy for best melodic rap performance goes to…]

“Spin Bout U” should definitely win, that was the best song off “Her Loss” to be honest.

[ALL MY LIFE]

I’m not the biggest fan of that song but it’s valid. Ay the Grammys ain’t too bad this year; okay, okay, okay.

Let’s see who’s bout to win rap album of the year. Man it better be Metro’s “Heroes and Villains”, that album was way too hard. “Utopia” was amazing too, and everybody loved it, so it’ll probably be one of those two.

[And the grammy for best rap album goes to…]

Surely Killer Mike isn’t about to sweep the Grammys, right? I mean, the album was great, but “Utopia” and “Heroes and Villains” were lowkey better.

[MICHAEL BY KILLER MIKE – DOWN BY LAW]

[vine thud]

Ain’t no way. Ain’t no way Killer Mike just swept the Grammys. It’s great that he’s getting the recognition he deserves, and the other two awards were valid, but it was NOT the best rap album there.

This all reminds me of that one Kendrick lyric…

[kendrick killer mike lyric]

This lyric perfectly sums up the hype around Atlanta rapper Killer Mike, one half of the rap duo Run the Jewels with Brooklyn producer and rapper EL-P, swept the Rap Grammys at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards hosted at the Crypto.com arena in LA on Feb. 4.

There’s only one person, especially when it comes to rap, who can claim the title of being the unhappiest one at the Grammys:

TRAVIS SCOTT: It’s lit

Travis. Scott.

When Killer Mike accepted his best rap album over Scott’s “Utopia,” which was one of the most streamed albums of 2023, Scott posted a single “raised eyebrow” emoji on Twitter, seemingly in response to the decision.

Also, they had him perform after loosing. I mean, just think about that for a second. Travis Scott had to go ON STAGE after losing best rap album.

He called them out during his show, where he performed “MY EYES,” “I KNOW” and “FE!N” with Playboi Carti, which are all amazing tracks from “Utopia.”

At the end of the first verse on “FE!N,” Scott had this to say:

SCOTT: They slept on me 10 times!

Here, he can be heard saying “They slept on me 10 times,” referring to how he has been nominated for 10 Grammys but has not received a single award.

This “Utopia” snub is reminiscent of when Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy…

[Bodak Yellow]

…beat Travis Scott’s Astroworld at the 2019 Grammys and Scott was visibly upset. It was one of the most infamous Grammy Award rap snubs of the 2010’s.

In my opinion, Killer Mike definitely deserved best rap performance and best rap song, but that best rap album award should have gone to either Travis Scott or Metro Boomin for his studio album, “Heroes and Villains.”

[Superhero]

One of the best parts of the ceremony was Jay-Z’s acceptance speech for the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, an award that highlights artists who have given back to their community beyond just music.

[Jay-Z speech clip]

Throughout the Speech, Jay-Z talks about how Beyonce was snubbed and has won the most Grammy awards but has never won album of the year, and how the Grammys has always had issues with minimizing the role of black artists in the music industry.

Despite being a massive rap fan and rapper myself, my favorite moment at this year’s ceremony was Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs performing “Fast Car.”

[Tracey Chapman and Luck Combs playing]

It was a beautiful rendition of the song, and it was amazing seeing how touched Combs and the audience were.

Well, hopefully you enjoyed this segment about the 66th Annual Grammys Ceremony!

That’s gonna wrap it up for Arts & Entertainment today! For WNUR News I’m Francesco Thorik-Saboia.
