This past Monday, results came out for the ASG Senate elections. Forty people ran for the twenty open “school-representative” spots. The winners were largely first-years and sophomores, across the six undergraduate schools.

The final Senate distribution is as follows: nine Weinberg senators, one SESP senator, two Medill senators, two School of Communications senators, one Bienen senator, and five McCormick senators.

Voting, which took place on the ‘Cats on Campus app, was open for the whole of the last weekend. Rather than choose one favorite, voters ranked their preferred candidates.

The first meeting of the year was held Wednesday, where senators met each other and were onboarded. Their first legislation-focused meeting will be held this Wednesday, where they will begin focusing on the issues facing Northwestern students.

Nationally, there has been a bit of drama involving the White House press secretary. The previous secretary, Karoline Leavitt, left the job this past August. Her replacement, Katie Zacharia, took the job on this past Monday, but left Friday. Communications Director Steven Cheung said that Zacharia will work for the Trump administration “in some form, but maybe a more pleasant form.”

Her tenure lasted less than a week, and was marred by false claims of being a lawyer, despite having never passed the bar exam. Her first press conference faced criticism, after reading largely from a script and only answering three questions.

A replacement has not yet been announced.

That’s all for today’s State of the N-Union. Check in next Monday to see what ASG has been up to between now and then. For WNUR News, I’m Noah Mayer.
