Welcome to the B-List, your weekly roundup of celebrity mess and pop culture. This week: a pop princess memoir, a global film festival, a Sofia Coppola film, and an October baseball showdown.

In celebrity, actor Matthew Perry died on Saturday at the age of 54. Best known for playing Chandler Bing in Friends, Perry appeared in a range of roles in theater and television, including The West Wing and The Good Wife. Just last year, his memoir recounting his rise and struggles with fame attracted significant media attention.

Another headline-generating memoir was released this week, as Britney Spears’ The Woman in Me climbs the bestseller list. The book explores her relationships with stardom, Justin Timberlake, and the Spears family. Britney herself has described it as part of her “healing process” following the end of her 13-year conservatorship in 2021.

In movies, the 59th edition of the Chicago International Film Festival came to a close this week, after screening 46 films for competition. The Golden Hugo for Best International Feature Film went to Explanation for Everything, a Hungarian-Slovakian coming-of-age story. I, for one, will be trying to get my hands on one of this year’s Film Fest posters.

Speaking of another buzzy festival premiere, Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla will get its wide release this weekend. The film will feature amazing ‘60s music and fashion, not to mention Cailee Spaeny as the titular Priscilla Presley and Jacob Elordi as her rock star husband. Expect to see many comparisons between Elordi and Austin Butler in last year’s Elvis

In sports, the Arizona Diamondbacks face the Texas Rangers in the World Series. The best-of-seven showdown is currently tied at 1-1, with Game 3 set for 7:03 pm Central tonight. No matter who wins, this series is sure to thrill two long-suffering fanbases.

That’s all for today’s edition of the B-List. Check in next Monday to hear about what happens this week in pop culture. For WNUR News, I’m Lara Choy.
